Tomorrow is the Haven House Pancake Palooza event. Haven House provides emergency housing and support services for families with children. The shelter helps families who are homeless prepare for permanent housing by developing and promoting self-sufficiency, stability, and financial responsibility. In addition to housing, residents receive meals, crisis counseling, assistance with goal setting and referrals to other agencies as needed. Through the generous support of family, friends, and colleagues, I have been able to raise money every year to support 15 to 20 families finding shelter and ultimately a permanent place to live. I’m so passionate about this organization because Haven House is the only homeless shelter program in the Mid-Michigan area that takes entire families into care. If not for Haven House, families would be split up to different shelters which is a traumatic childhood event that follows the children the rest of their lives.
This year the competition for the Pancake Champion Trophy is the toughest I have ever had. This is good news because others are stepping up to help families in crisis. But, on my end, I am falling short of my commitment to help and as a result, right now five families will not be able to receive the care of Haven House in 2019. For every $1,000 donated, one entire family is provided shelter and ultimately a permanent place to stay. Often, they also receive assistance in finding employment as part of this care.
I am making a personal plea to all of my friends, family and colleagues to help me support five families that are in need of help. You are truly making a difference.
