This week, our hearts are collectively heavy as we mourn the passing of President Jimmy Carter. We have lost an extraordinary statesman who epitomized what it means to live a lifetime to service. What I find truly remarkable right now is the shared sense of loss felt by millions around the globe, whether they knew President Carter or not. His life was defined by his commitment to compassion, service and justice. His tireless advocacy for the homeless and Habitat for Humanity are a part of his legacy that is often underemphasized but had such a profound impact. Through his work with Habitat, President Carter brought global attention to the critical need for affordable housing, rallying millions to action and providing families around the world with the stability and opportunity that come with a safe home.
I had the honor of working alongside President Carter on two Habitat for Humanity builds in the early 2000s. In 2004, I joined him and Rosalynn Carter in Veracruz, Mexico, for the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project. It was humbling to see him labor shoulder-to-shoulder with volunteers and future homeowners. A year later, we had the privilege of working with the Carters again, building homes in Benton Harbor and Detroit for families in need. Witnessing President Carter’s dedication firsthand was a deeply moving experience – one that reaffirmed the belief that addressing homelessness and housing insecurity is not just an act of charity but a moral imperative. In my meetings with him I found him to be down-to-earth and a very caring, humble person. Not many people of his status are like that. Rosalynn was definitely a force behind him.
Beyond his many achievements, what stood out most about President Carter was his extraordinary ability to connect with people. Whether building homes in a small community or advocating for peace on a global stage, he inspired hope, unity, and action. Today, as we celebrate his life and legacy, we are reminded of the profound difference one person can make.
On behalf of myself and the entire Cinnaire team, we pay tribute to President Carter’s lifetime of service and commitment to building a better world. He demonstrated that compassion and dedication have the power to transform lives and communities.
Rest in peace, President Carter. Your legacy will continue to inspire us all.
