A Tribute to Mel Farr Superstar
Last week, family, friends, and fans mourned the passing of former Detroit Lion and legendary businessman, Mel Farr, who suddenly died at his home at the age of 70.

As a high school standout in Texas, Mel Farr nearly became a Michigan State Spartan, but opted for the Bruins of UCLA where he became a college All-American and a Rose Bowl Champion over Michigan State University in 1966. Selected as a first-round draft pick by the Detroit Lions, Mel was named Offensive Rookie of the Year by the NFL and made two Pro Bowl trips during his professional football career before beginning another illustrious career off the field.
Following his football career Mel Farr became the most-successful black business owner in America and grew Mel Farr Ford into a half-billion dollar company worth over $600 million during its peak. In addition to his business success, Mel Farr received a Gold Record for his role as a backup singer on the 1971 hit by Marvin Gaye, “What’s Going On?
