Cinnaire joined our partners at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission of Mid-Michigan to host the 40th Annual MLK Day of Celebration, honoring his enduring legacy of justice, equality and service. The event, held in Lansing, brought together community leaders, changemakers, and advocates to reflect on Dr. King’s vision and to celebrate those who embody his spirit of action. The event was guided by Masters of Ceremonies Cinnaire CEO Mark McDaniel and AARP Michigan State Director Paula Cunningham.Â

A Day of Inspiration

The event’s centerpiece was the keynote address by Dr. Bernard Lafayette, a renowned civil rights leader and close confidant of Dr. King. Dr. Lafayette’s remarks deeply moved the audience as he reflected on his personal journey of advocating for nonviolence and social justice. His lifetime of service in the civil rights movement and his role in shaping future leaders continue to serve as an inspiration to all who strive for equality. Â

The celebration was energized by performances from the Detroit Youth Choir and Rodney Page. Known for empowering youth through music, the Detroit Youth Choir delivered dynamic performances that reflected Dr. King’s vision of equality and community. Rodney Page, a gifted musician and songwriter, captivated the crowd with his soulful performance, using music to inspire unity. Both performances underscored the power of the arts to drive positive change.
Lansing Mayor Andy Schor and East Lansing Mayor George Brookover shared their thoughts on the significance of community collaboration in advancing the causes of justice and equity. Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II also attended, demonstrating his steadfast support for equity and justice across Michigan.
Empowering the Next Generation

The program emphasized the vital role of higher education in shaping a brighter future, with scholarships awarded to graduating seniors pursuing their academic goals. Cinnaire donates $50,000 annually to support the Mark S. McDaniel and James Butler College Scholarship program. The competitive program is designed to inspire and empower Greater Lansing area students from all backgrounds to achieve higher education. This year’s scholarship theme invited students to reflect on Dr. King’s powerful words: “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed – We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.” Since inception, the scholarship program has provided more than $350,000 to youth scholarships through this event.
Honoring Excellence
This year’s King Legacy Service Award was presented to Dr. Lee June, a Tuskegee University graduate who has dedicated his career to advancing education, diversity, and social justice. With leadership roles at Michigan State University, his work in student services and advocacy for racial and multicultural issues make him a deserving recipient of the King Legacy Service Award.
